Strengthening Education in Powys

As a result of Welsh Assembly Local Government Settlement, Powys County Council education services are severely underfunded.  Our young people get less per pupil than young people in England by the tune of £645 per pupil.  This is something I will immediately raise with our Lib Dem Assembly Member who runs education in Wales.  The UK Conservative Government has allocated an extra £52.2 million for Powys schools and I will be watching the spending of this money closely to ensure parents see improvements in their children’s schools.

I also want to tackle the disparate availability of Welsh language education.  Powys County Council urgently need to increase the provision of education through the medium of welsh – particularly in the creative sectors.

Also, we should be looking over the border to see examples of best practice – we should consider creating Academies, freeing up teachers to teach and enabling schools to manage their own budgets.
