Fay Jones MP has welcomed the Government decision to waiver the visa fee for Commonwealth veterans and Gurkhas with six years service in the British Armed Forces. This waiver also includes those who have been discharged due to an illness or injury attributable to their service who want to settle here.
Speaking during a Westminster Hall debate last year Fay Jones made the call for free citizenship for ex Gurkha soldiers during a high profile debate on Gurkha pensions. Following this weeks decision
Fay jones said
"With so many Gurkhas living and working in Brecon, I am really pleased the MOD has listened to those of us calling for free citizenship. The Gurkhas, and soldiers from around the Commonwealth, have served our nation with distinction and this is the least they deserve.
This will save each applicant, who has served at least 6 years in the Army, about £2900. The fee waiver will also apply to eligible veterans currently living in the UK who have not regularised their immigration status. This is a fantastic move from the Government. "
