Statement on Coronavirus (COVID-19) from Fay Jones MP
The outbreak of coronavirus will have many of my constituents concerned and worried about the future. Without doubt, this is the biggest public health emergency in a generation. It calls for dramatic action, at home and abroad, of the kind not normally seen in peacetime.
The Government’s priority is to protect life. We are working closely with Public Health departments, the Welsh Government, the NHS and numerous stakeholder groups to ensure that the most accurate advice is issued to the public in a timely manner. We have now moved to daily news briefings from the Prime Minister, the Chief Medical Officer and the Chief Scientific Advisor. This will mean that everyone, across the UK, will be able to be updated on the latest government advice, supported by a science-based approach.
I am reassured that the Chancellor and the Welsh Finance Minister are committed to supporting businesses, small and large, during this uncertain time. Brecon and Radnorshire’s thriving rural economy is one of my core focusses and I will be working with colleagues in Westminster and in Cardiff to continue this essential dialogue. Further and more specific assistance that is available to businesses in Brecon and Radnorshire can be found here: https://gov.wales/guidance-employers-and-businesses-covid-19
For the time being, I would like to encourage everyone to disregard what might be being posted on social media. At this time, misinformation is deeply unhelpful and will only encourage panic.
Given the speed at which the situation is developing, the UK Government website - https://www.gov.uk/government/topical-events/coronavirus-covid-19-uk-government-response - is the very best place to access the most accurate and up to date information.
Please be reassured that this is the Government’s utmost priority – and mine. My staff and I are working all possible hours to communicate with concerned constituents. If I can help with anything, please do not hesitate to contact my office on fay.jones.mp@parliament.uk or 07515 034 124.
Times like these show the true meaning of community. I have seen countless examples of individuals going the extra mile to ensure that vulnerable individuals have the support they need. I am enormously grateful to everyone in Brecon and Radnorshire who are supporting their friends and neighbours.
Please look after each other and please stay safe – we will get through this.
Fay Jones MP
Member of Parliament for Brecon and Radnorshire
