Brecon and Radnorshire MP, Fay Jones, has welcomed the Governments Retained EU Law Bill, also known as the Brexit Freedoms Bill which passed through Parliament last week.
The United Kingdom was a world leader in human rights and employment laws long before the European Union was formalised. The Brexit Freedoms Bill will give the Government the freedom to cement existing rights as well as allowing us to go further than existing European laws.
Fay Jones commented on the importance of this Bill saying: “I am very pleased to see this legislation pass through Parliament. It is imperative following our departure from the EU we make the most of our freedoms. The Brexit Freedoms Bill will come into force at the end of this year and will allow us to tailor make laws in keeping with what the British people need. The United Kingdom has one of the best records on workers’ rights, going further than the EU in many areas, and I am determined to build on this progress to maximise the benefits of Brexit, which is what the United Kingdom voted for.”
Concerning the backlash from environmental groups, Fay Jones went on to clarify: “There has been a lot of misinformation surrounding our environmental legislation. Outside of the European Union we now have a chance to revisit environmental legislation to ensure that it works better for our farmers, our species, and our climate. I’m glad we are able to throw off the straight-jacket of the Common Agricultural Policy but also keep positive aspects of environmental laws such as elements of the Habitats and Birds directive.”
