It was a pleasure to be joined by local members of NFU Cymru, marking a day of engaging discussions and memorable experiences.
The morning session was particularly insightful, focusing on the pressing issues confronting our farming community. Central to our discussions were the banking challenges that farmers face. This isn't just about irregular access to cash; it extends to more complex problems like de-banking and frustrating delays in processing vital cheques - issues that are further compounded by poor internet connectivity in rural areas. These factors collectively create a significant operational hurdle for our farmers.
Additionally, the conversation turned towards the regulatory and investment approaches of the Welsh Government in Cardiff Bay. The sentiment among the members was clear: there's a feeling of overregulation coupled with underinvestment, which is hampering the growth and sustainability of the agricultural sector in Wales.
After our discussions, the visitors enjoyed a tour of Westminster including both Chambers and a group photo with Fay Jones MP in Westminster Hall.
Ms. Jones acknowledged the gravity of the issues raised by NFU Cymru members. She expressed her commitment to raising these matters in her upcoming meeting with the Economic Secretary to the Treasury and advocating for the needs and challenges of our farmers.
