On Tuesday 16th May, Fay Jones met with representatives of Welsh Water in Westminster to discuss their role in the pollution of rivers in Brecon and Radnorshire and steps they are taking to remedy the situation.
Fay was pleased to hear assurances on Welsh Water’s part that they are doing all that they can on remedying pollution from storm overflows and was pleased to read yesterday of their apology to the public for past deficiencies. Fay has made it very clear nonetheless that the term Special Area of Conservation – which applies to the Wye Valley, and the responsibilities that come with operating in its vicinity – are not optional.
It is vital therefore for Welsh Water to continue doing everything they can, along with the Welsh Government – which is responsible for this area of policy – to reduce instances of storm overflows of raw untreated sewage and improve water quality.
