Yesterday, Fay Jones MP welcomed the Secretary of State for Wales, Simon Hart MP to her constituency as he visited local hydrogen car company, Riversimple.
Based in Llandrindod Wells, Riversimple is providing an innovative solution to decarbonise rural transport, by leasing hydrogen cars to it's customers. In 2019, the company was awarded UK Government funding of £1.25 million from the Office for Low Emission Vehicles. This supported the production of 17 of Riversimple’s ultra-efficient car, the Rasa.
The visit from the Secretary of State for Wales reiterated the UK Government’s commitment to delivering an economy which is stronger, greener and more sustainable. In light of COVID-19 and the resulting lockdown, a green recovery will protect existing jobs, create new jobs and create a resilient economy fit for the future.
Announcements have already been made in the Chancellor's Summer Statement, for a £3 billion green investment package that could help support around 140,000 green jobs and reduce emissions across the UK. The Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy has also announced a Green Recovery working group, which will explore how to capture the economic growth opportunities from the shift to net zero emissions.
The UK has played a world-leading role in tackling climate change and transitioning to Clean Growth. The UK is the first country to pass legislation to bring all greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050, and the fastest in the G20 to cut emissions.
Fay Jones MP said:
“It was wonderful to welcome the Secretary of State for Wales to Brecon and Radnorshire, to witness first-hand how UK Government support to decarbonise has helped to deliver jobs to the rural economy.
“Delivering a green economic recovery for the whole of the UK is incredibly important and I am determined to ensure that rural areas are not overlooked in our drive to decarbonise.
“Riversimple are a great local company, delivering an innovative hydrogen-based solution to rural transport, which is all too often reliant on cars. I would like to thank the team in Llandrindod Wells for providing a fantastic opportunity to see the work they do.”
