On Tuesday, Fay Jones MP spoke during the Second Reading of the Domestic Abuse Bill.
Speaking via video link, Miss Jones laid out her support for the Bill and raised the case of her constituent who having left an abusive relationship, found that financial ties allowed coercive control from her ex-husband to continue over seven years after their marriage had ended.
The Domestic Abuse Bill will include economic abuse within its scope and Miss Jones called for the Bill to review of the financial ties that can exist within abusive relationships and to find ways to help victims completely free themselves.
Rural areas present particular challenges when it comes to policing and safeguarding against domestic abuse. Miss Jones asked the Minister for careful consideration of these challenges and she will continue to work with the Minister to ensure that vulnerable people in Brecon and Radnorshire are protected from domestic abuse.
Fay Jones MP said:
"The Domestic Abuse Bill could not come at a more important time. While most of us take refuge in our homes from COVID-19, it is important to recognise that the virus is not the biggest threat to those who are enduring ‘lockdown’ with an abuser.
"In introducing a new definition of domestic abuse to the statute book, this Bill will ensure that all domestic abuse is properly understood.
"I give this Bill my firm support. It gives me huge pride to be part of a Government – which, at this time of national crisis – prioritises legislation which protects vulnerable individuals from harm."
